Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes
combined to rescue a point for Manchester United in their 1-1 draw with
Tottenham on Friday night – and the Red Devils might’ve won it if not for VAR.
Another mistake by David de Gea
almost cost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s the game as Steven Bergwijn’s first-half
effort slipped through the United goalkeeper to leave Roy Keane frothing at the
mouth in the Sky studios.
Both goals were scored by
players signed in January
A host of players were returning
from injury – including Marcus Rashford, Harry Kane and Heung-min Son – but it
was Pogba who had the biggest impact despite not starting the game.
In a flash of genius, he left Eric
Dier spinning and drew a foul, winning the penalty which was duly converted by
Fernandes in the final ten minutes.
De Gea and Maguire were caught
wanting for the Spurs goal
Then, for a moment, it looked as
though United might snatch all three points when the referee pointed to the
spot for another foul by Dier.
But while Pogba and Fernandes
came to the rescue for the visitors, VAR was on hand to save Spurs from what
would’ve been a significant injustice.
VAR came to the correct
conclusion to overrule the penalty decision
After a cautious start to
proceedings in this unusual new setting, the match sparked into life when
Bergwijn breezed through the Manchester United defence as though they weren’t
there.
Tottenham’s January signing
fired a fierce strike at David de Gea which proved to hot to handle – prompting
Keane to claim he’d be ‘throwing punches’ at the Spaniard in the dressing room.
Keane’s words perhaps struck
fear into the United squad at half-time and inspired a significantly improved
second-half display.
As Kane and Rashford continued
their groggy returns from injury, Pogba made an instant impact off the bench
and showed Solskjaer what he’s been missing for much of this season.
Pogba produced a moment of magic
to win the penalty
Fernandes stepped up to score
his third goal in six Premier League games for United, sending Hugo Lloris the
wrong way from the spot.
The January signing was United’s
most inspiring player by far – but we can’t allow his dive in the final moments
to go without a mention.
Mourinho’s men remain without a
win in seven
Thankfully, VAR was on hand to
see there was absolutely no contact between Dier and the Portuguese midfielder,
flying the flag for technology after its failings at Villa Park on Wednesday.
The result leaves Man United two
points adrift of fourth-place Chelsea, having played a game more, while
Tottenham remain eighth.
