Neal Maupay will dominate the
headlines for many reasons on Saturday, scoring a last gasp winner in
Brighton’s 2-1 win over Arsenal after his role in Bernd Leno’s horror injury.
The French forward popped up in
the last minute of the game, much to the fury of the Gunners players,
completing a remarkable turnaround after Lewis Dunk had cancelled out Nicolas
Pepe’s wonderstrike.
Pepe proved his worth in the
68th minute with a wonderful curling effort as the Gunners looked to overcome a
nasty-looking injury to goalkeeper Leno in the first-half, which came after a
controversial collision with match-winner Maupay.
However, Brighton captain Dunk
bundled the ball into the Arsenal net just seven minutes later to level things
up.
Then chaos ensued as Maupay, of
all people, netted a last-gasp winner, sparking some ugly scenes as the Gunners
players lost their cool.
The Gunners have a miserable
record in Brighton, having not won there since 1981, and their dismal luck
continued at The Amex.
Arsenal were banging on the door
before Mikel Arteta lost a third player to injury since the restart when Leno
landed horribly from Maupay’s challenge.
The German shot-stopper, clearly
in a great deal of distress, furiously confronted the French forward as he left
on a stretcher, and some Arsenal players also accused Maupay of cynicism.
Leno’s injury seemed to suck the
energy from the visitors, who had looked bright in the early stages of the
game.
But Pepe provided the spark his
team needed, and the quality they paid for, with a sensational goal.
Their lead was short-lived,
however, when Dunk effectively scored with a tackle.
The England defender blocked Rob
Holding’s goal-line clearance, and the ball crossed the line despite the
Arsenal man’s attempt to haul it back with his arm.
And Brighton were in dreamland
when Maupay struck in the fifth of three added minutes to complete the
turnaround, before Matteo Guendouzi sparked a melee by lashing out at his
compatriot.
But Brighton won’t care – having
sealed their first win of and moving five points clear of the relegation zone.
