Simon Jordan has advised Arsenal to make a decision over the future of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, telling the club: ‘Sign him or sell him’.

The talkSPORT pundit was responding to claims from former Gunners star Paul Merson, who told his old club to keep hold of their captain and top striker at all costs this summer, even if it means losing him for free when his contract expires.

Aubameyang – who has 16 goals in all competitions this season – penned a three-and-a-half year deal when he signed for Arsenal in January 2018, which expires in June 2021.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson said he would risk running the Gabon international’s contract down if it meant keeping him for another season, so he can fire the Gunners back to Champions League football.

"Get us in the Champions League and you can go for free."

Paul Merson says Arsenal can't afford to sell striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer despite the forward entering the final 12 months of his contract.  🔴📝

That – losing Aubameyang, not returning to Europe’s elite competition – will be the last thing many fans will want, having lost a number of star players in the past in similar circumstances.

And Jordan is of the same mind, saying Arsenal should be trying everything to secure their skipper’s services.

He does think, however, that they should cash in on him if their efforts fail.

The former Crystal Palace owner said on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “On a commercial front, talking about ownership of a player and what’s best for the football club, Arsenal have got to either sign him or probably sell him.

“For him to go for free, having paid the best part of £60m for him, doesn’t make any sense.

“I think they’ve got to try and get this boy to sign.

“He’s been there for two years and it’s perplexing to me why he’s not on a four-year contract anyway.

Darren Bent explains why Manchester United and Arsenal would be taking a risk in signing Aaron Ramsey from Juventus.

“He was 28 when they bought him, so why would they have not put him on a four year contract and not be under pressure 18 months into the contract as a matter of course? It’s bad thinking, bad management and bad planning.

“So Paul Merson’s point of view about keeping him in place for another year, it’s not going to happen.

“Arsenal are not going to sit there and just allow Aubameyang to do what Aaron Ramsey did .

“He’s a £60m player, in their view, he’s a top player.”
