Amaju at Bendel rebrand, says Eagles back in Benin City

Thursday, 1 March 2018

The rebranding of one of Nigeria’s foremost football clubsides, Bendel Insurance FC of Benin City has continue to attract comments from stakeholders of the sport, even as Governor Godwin Obaseki, says apart from the private sector being the target to takeover, there will be a new Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City in the coming months.

His deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu, explained further that what his Principal has simply declared is that the new Ogbemudia Stadium will not be an astro-turf or artificial ground but pure grass and work is almost at 30 percent level. “When next people who are here come to watch a game at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, you will see a brand new stadium that is comparable to international standards.

The comments of the two Edo leaders got the leadership of the NFF, led by Melvin Amaju Pinnick, thinking and his immediate reaction is that the standard bearer of Nigerian football; Super Eagles will return to Benin City, sooner than later.

“His Excrellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki, contributed hugely, while I was running for the Confederation of African Football positions, he has also been in the forefront of hosting all our women national teams in this our great city and what can we reward him with than to bring back the Super Eagles to their original home in Benin City”. The Super Eagles will soon be back to the home.”

He recalled that at a point eight players of the national team, who were regulars were from the old Bendel State, consisting of Edo and Delta and thanked Governor Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu for bringing back the nostalgia of the days when the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium was filled to capacity before 12 noon, any day Bendel Insurance was playing.

Another strong voice at the occasion and the man fondly called Football Aficionado, Godwin Dudu Orumen, said at the event that he was convinced that the days when the Old Bendel State ruled Nigerian sports are back under Governor Obaseki. “He has not only showed it with what he has been doing so far, he has been putting words into action. I think those of us who love sports in Edo, Nigeria and indeed Africa should start celebrating that the good old days are back for us.”
