How Deji Tinubu Helped Activate NWFL Champions Shield - Falode

Monday, 19 February 2018

Chairperson of the Nigeria Women Professional League (NWPF), Aisha Falode, says she will be eternally grateful to late Lagos State Sports Commission Chairman and former NFF Executive Committee member and Chairman of the Marketing Committee, Deji Tinubu, for his contribution to making the NWFL Champions Shield a reality.

The Championship will be between Aiteo Cup Champions, Rivers Angels and League Champions, Nasarawa Amazons, who won the league Super Four in Benin City, last year.

Acknowledging the huge impact of current Sports Commission boss in Lagos, Dr Kwekwu Tandoh, Falode, said the deal actually started when the Late Tinubu was a Special Adviser to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Sports. “Needless here to say that the duo was like Siamese twins but it all worked out very well for women football in Nigeria.

She recalled that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, was the final arbiter but it must take the push of great men, who serve as his eyes and ears in sports to push it through and Late Tinubu, was very key at the time.

The final crystallisation was during the Aiteo Cup final at the Agege Stadium, and during the break, I dare to come close to Governor Ambode at the VIP area and told him our intention, with Tinubu and several aides around, he beat his chest and said he will do it. We want to use this opportunity to appreciate the Late Deji Tinubu and also appreciate all those who made the Champions Shield, a possibility, especially His Excellency, Governor Ambode”, she declared.

The Champions League between Rivers Angels and Nasarawa Amazons will come up   March 4, at the ultra-modern Agege Stadium in Lagos, with Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, expected to grace the occasion.
