Rivers Utd play host to Gombe Utd on Sunday

Saturday, 2 September 2017

When Rivers United defeated Remo Stars 3-1 on August 13, they confirmed the relegation of Sagamu club from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

A win for Rivers United on Sunday over Gombe United in Port Harcourt will also ratify the relegation of the ‘Desert scorpions’.

Rivers United are red hot favourites to record a win in the match day 37 NPFL game for two reasons.

The ‘Pride of Rivers’ have experienced a renaissance that have seen them go undefeated in their last four NPFL games.

Secondly, Rivers United’s top flight status is not yet assured and failure to amass maximum points at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt on Sunday will be tantamount to rubbishing the good work of past weeks; seeing it all count for nothing.

Gombe United appear fired up for the challenge as attacking midfielder, Austin Oladapo explained with River Unite official website.

“(Sunday’s) match is a big game and we expect to get a point from the game.

“Even though (our position on the log is not too encouraging), we are here (in Port Harcourt) to get something from this game.

“We are looking to either get a point or all three from Sunday’s game,” he said.

Strong words but the noises from the Rivers United camp are understandably bullish as well with in-form striker, Emeka Ogbugh sure of a win for the Port Harcourt darlings on Sunday.

“(Winning on Sunday against Gombe United) in non-negotiable. We want the three points.

“We are unbeaten from our last four games and we have been playing very well.

“We want to get three points against Gombe United and at least a point in our final game of the season against Abia Warriors in Umuahia,” he concluded.
