Cross Rivers State standard bearers in
the maiden Aieto Cup, before now known
as the Challenge Cup and later the FA Cup, Wednesday caused the biggest upset
in the championship, as they sent out Nigeria’s Professional League defending
champions Rangers International of Enugu, out of the championship.
An elated General Manager of Rovers,
Maurice Inoch, told the media that he feels it was still like a dream when the
referee blew the final whistle in a game played at the UJ Esuene Stadium in
Calabar. “It’s not about home advantage,
we were the underdogs but the doggedness of our players showed that we
can go places if we get the required support from all existing agencies in the
state, including the Corporate world.
Rangers scored first in the 7th minute
before the homers drew level in the 15th minute. At the end of the game,
penalties had to decide who carries it and Rangers fell by 6-7.
Inoch said the victory has been
dedicated to their State Governor, Ben Ayade, who has been very supportive but
also noted that more support was needed from the state and Corporate Nigeria as
the team has demonstrated that it has capacity to conquer the world if well
oiled.
The team boss, said the victory is
already behind the team, as they prepare for the next round of the championship
and declared that the team will not disappoint if the needed support comes.
