Eneji strikes late to save Plateau's blushes

Monday, 28 August 2017

Peter Eneji's 90th-minute equaliser earned Plateau United a point and denied Stanley Eguma's Rivers United a richly-deserved victory in a cracking NPFL game at the Rwang Pam Stadium in Jos.

Emeka Ogbugh looked to have put the pride of Rivers on course for three points with a cool finish from Doumbia Zoumana's cross after just 12 minutes leaving the home fans stunned and the Rwang Pam stadium as quiet as a grave yard.

Plateau United had not lost any game at home this season and the fans were not used to seeing their team falling behind at home.

Plateau United rallied back to find the equalizer but misses from Anayo Ogbonna, Kabiru Umar and Joshua Umar did not help their course in the first 45 minutes.

Upon resumption after the break, Plateau United controlled the game for long periods but the Rivers United keeper Sunday Rotimi stood firmly between them and the equalizer.

A penalty was awarded to Plateau United after the referee adjudged that an infringement was committed in the Rivers United box in the 75th minute.

Energetic midfielder Emmanuel James stepped up to take the spot kick but the experienced Sunday Rotimi stood firm with his big frame ensuring that James shot into the skies.

With clock ticking down and plateau United faced with the prospect of loosing at home for the first time this season, one special moment was just what would save the blushes of the host.

That moment came in the 90th minute when Peter Eneji's strike from a free kick just outside the box salvaged the draw.

Plateau United will reflect they had enough chances to win and, in the late drama, there was still time for Obaje Joshua to cannon a left-foot effort off the crossbar but it was also true that Stanley Eguma's side had matched them all the way.
