Green Africa Airways, a Lagos-based
airline start-up, is commencing its Air Operating Certificate (AOC) process.
This marks another major step for
the new airline which received an Air Transport License (ATL) from the Nigerian
government last year. Babawande Afolabi, founder and CEO of Green Africa
Airways said, “Our vision is to make safe and quality air travel profitably
accessible to as many Nigerians as possible. Embarking on our AOC process - the
last regulatory requirement before our inaugural flight – brings us much closer
to realizing this vision.”
Green Africa Airways enters the
market against a backdrop of significant headwinds, including a depreciating
naira and a rapidly changing local aviation industry.
Asked how the new airline plans to
navigate this operating environment, Afolabi responded, “The need for a quality
airline that will better connect people and resources in Nigeria and further
open up the West African seaboard is unequivocally clear. That said, we have
always thought that building Green Africa Airways is going to be a classic case
of an enduring house painstakingly built one brick at a time.”
The new carrier has yet to publicly announce
a specific date for its first flight.
