General co-ordinator of Rivers United FC, Bashir Badawiy has taken the time to commend the sponsors of the club, the Rivers State Government for ‘enormous and unflinching support in 2016’ and hopes the momentum will be maintained in the coming days.

United tore the form books to shreds by finishing as runners-up in their maiden season in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) in 2016.

Badawiy believes that the bar has been raised and is calling on all stakeholders of the club ‘to move in one direction’ as the club campaigns for honours on three fronts in 2017.

“I want to use this medium to thank the Rivers State Government – sponsors of Rivers United FC – for their enormous and unflinching  support to the team since the merger (of Sharks and Dolphins) on February 19, 2016.

“The Governor, His Excellency, Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike (CON) has led from the front and by example as the Father of Sports in Rivers State and number one supporter of Rivers United FC.

“We are the only Nigerian club that went to Europe (Spain) as part of our pre-season preparations and it buttresses the commitment of the Governor and the Rivers State Governor in the support of the football club.

“I will also not fail to specially commend the Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Honourable Boma Iyaye who has had many sleepless nights on account of Rivers United FC.

“Without the Commissioner’s guidance and leadership, it would have been impossible to achieve what we (Rivers United FC) did in our first season in the NPFL last season.

“Now the bar has been raised even higher and if we are to succeed in 2017, everyone associated with this club must move in one direction because if we don’t, we will certainly fail.

“I want to thank all our fans for their massive support and on behalf of the football club, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year celebrations,” he told

Rivers United will compete in the NPFL, Federation Cup and CAF Champions League in 2017.
