Chelsea boss Antonio Conte admitted that he only has a great side
‘on paper’ after their crushing 3-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates.
The Gunners simply blew Chelsea away with a scintillating first
half performance, as goals from Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil saw
Arsene Wenger’s side race into a three-goal lead.
In truth it could have been worse for Chelsea, and barring the
injury to Francis Coquelin in the first half, it was a near perfect opening 45
minutes for the Gunners.
It took until the 82nd minute for Chelsea to register their first
chance on target, and Conte admitted that his side simply weren’t at the races.
"I think that we didn't have the right attitude from the
first minute,” said Conte to BT Sport after the match. “After today we are
thinking we must work a lot because we are a great team only on paper.
“It is always a team
problem rather than individuals, When nothing works it is very hard for a
player to play well.”
For Chelsea, Arsenal’s opening goal had an all-too-familiar feel
about it.
For the third time this season, Conte saw his opponents capitalise
on a mistake from Gary Cahill as Alexis Sanchez fire home after just 11
minutes.
But Conte preferred to publically blame the collective, rather
than individuals.
"I don't want to talk about the mistake [Gary Cahill]. it is
not right for the player. We win and lose as a team. If someone thinks this
team is ready to fight, I think we must wait to improve a lot to come back a
great team on the pitch, not just on paper.
"We have not got the balance and now is the moment to
consider everything. It is incredible to concede three goals. We must have last
season present in our mind to not repeat the mistakes. We must reflect a lot to
find very soon the right way."
