Don urges govt to partner vet doctors on food security, safety

The Chairman of the Local Organising committee for the 6th African Vetrinary Association and 53rd Nigerian Vetrinary Medical Association joint congress, Prof. Denchris Nnabuike Onah has stressed the need  to partner with veterinary doctors in order to ensure food security and safety.


He made the call on Wednesday in Enugu, during a press conference organised as part of preparations towards the congress which held at The Dome Event Centre.


In his address, Prof. Onah said that the Association is also out to liase with farmers in order to power an economic rejuvenation in the area of animal and crop production.


Speaking on the congress with the theme, "Towards Economic Diversification and sustainable Developemt," Prof. Onah noted that it is apt considering the economic challenges facing the country.


"Having a joint congress of these two big Associations in Enugu at this time will add to the growth of the state the South-East and the nation at large," he said.


He further added that the congress is programmed to be a tourism harvest for the state and an opportunity to meet with and attract investors to the State and Nigeria in general.


While noting that this is the first time AVA and NVMA are jointly hosting a professional congress in Nigeria, the Prof said that it will also provide business men and women as well as SMEs the opportunity of meeting with major players in the livestock sub sector in Africa and to showcase their businesses and services during the congress.


Prof. Onah however expressed dissatisfaction with the failure of Nigerians to appreciate the pivotal role Veterinarians play.


"Many of our government officials don't even think or appreciate the importance of Veterinarians in the socio economic sector of the country especially as it relates to food safety and sufficiency" he stated.


The congress is scheduled to hold from the 31st of October to the 4th of November 2016 at De- Dome Event Centre in Enugu.
