A Lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof Charles
Omekwu has stressed the need to embrace technological advancement in order to
meet contemporary challenges
He made the call during the 113th inaugural lecture of the
University which held at the Princess Alexandra Auditorium recently.
While presenting a keynote address entitled: "Cyberspace
Revolution: Issues, implications and imperatives, prof. Omekwu said that Cyberspace
has made everything easy as its impact is felt in all aspects of human life,
irrespective of ones' location.
"Cyberspace(computer) has created revolution in the world not
only by itself as a stand alone unit but also because of the penetration of the
internet" he said, adding that it has thus become one of the necessities
of every home.
According to the don, the world has gradually turned away from
old- fashioned methods and has embraced technology because of its influence in
video conferencing, e- learning, e- banking, e- marketing, e- medicine and the
like.
He also noted that cyberspace provides a veritable basis for
academic excellence.
"Cyberspace environment provides the enabling platform for
individual and institutional visibility on the global scale". "Those
who fail to embrace the technological revolution will be relegated to the
background of global insignificance" he stated.
Earlier in his welcome address, the VC of the University who was
represented by the DVC Academics, Prof. James Chukwuemeka Ogbonna, said that
the topic was timely giving that the world has become a global village where
virtually every endeavour is ICT driven.
"There is no better time to have this scholarly lecture than
now that the world is ICT - dominated
and compliant". "Everything we do is basically centered on the use of
ICT for efficient service delivery" he said.
He thanked everyone who made out time to be part of the inaugural
lecture.
