INEC reschedules 2019 General Elections

Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has rescheduled 2019 General Elections by one week.


In a statement signed by INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the decision was taken after a careful review of the implementation and operational plan and the determination to conduct free, fair elections, with the conclusion that proceeding with the elections as scheduled was no longer feasible.


“This was a difficult decision for the commission to take but necessary for the successful delivery of elections and the consolidation of our democracy,” Yakubu said.


According to the release, the Presidential and National Assembly Elections will now hold on Saturday, 23rd February 2019, while  Governorship, State House of Assembly and Federal Capital Territory, FCT Area Council Elections is Saturday for 9th March 2019.


INEC said the decision to reschedule the elections came as a matter of necessity for the successful conduct of free, fair elections and to consolidate on the nation's democracy.


The Commission will meet key stakeholders to update them on this development at 2pm today at the Abuja International Conference Centre.
